GitHub Faces 50% Error Rate in Repository Downloads and Copilot Availability Issues

A significant disruption occurred on GitHub's platform, with a reported 50% error rate on repository content downloads and degraded availability of GitHub Copilot. The issues began at 1340 UTC, causing impacted performance for various services including Issues, which was experiencing its own problems. Microsoft, the parent company of GitHub, has acknowledged these disruptions as a strain, particularly due to AI-assisted coding and agentic workflows. This is not the first time GitHub has faced such issues; earlier in August, its Actions automation platform and Pages hosting service experienced problems. In June, software engineering SVP Jakub Oleksy promised structural changes to remove failure modes and improve reliability. However, today's incident demonstrates that there is still work to be done, causing frustration among developers who took to social media to express their concerns.
