Lego's Largest Hubble Space Telescope Model Released, Yet Some Criticize Its Design

Key takeaways

  • Lego has released its largest Hubble Space Telescope model
  • The model uses grey plastic extensively
  • Critics argue that certain design choices make it feel less impressive

Lego has unveiled its most extensive Hubble Space Telescope model to date, a minifig scale replica that surpasses the observatory included in the Space Shuttle Discovery set. However, some critics argue that the model's excessive use of grey plastic and certain design choices make it feel less impressive.

The new set, priced at £119.99, consists of 1,252 pieces and measures approximately 32 cm tall, 38 cm long, and 38 cm wide when the aperture door is open. It includes an astronaut minifigure, a power tool, a stand showcasing Hubble's iconic imagery, and a plaque with information about the Space Shuttle servicing missions.

Inside, the model features Lego representations of Hubble's instruments and systems, such as its gyroscopes, primary mirror, and secondary mirror. External components include posable solar arrays and antennas, an opening aperture door, and some fiddly parts. The set is intended for builders aged 18 and above.

Despite the impressive level of detail given the nature of Lego components, critics point out that the model's grey color scheme and the use of stickers instead of printed parts detract from its overall appearance. Some also compare unfavorably the new model to the Hubble Space Telescope included in the Space Shuttle Discovery Icons set, which uses silver bricks.

Despite these criticisms, the Lego version is generally well-received as an enjoyable build lasting between 6 and 12 hours. The set also commemorates Hubble's 35th anniversary, celebrated in April 2025, with a '35' decal on the astronaut minifigure.
