Billion-Dollar Investments Propel Private Fusion Startups Forward

Over the past few years, private fusion startups have attracted significant investments, totaling over $10 billion according to data provided to TechCrunch by FusionX. Among these, Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has raised the most with a total of $3.94 billion, followed by Helion ($3.2 billion), TAE Technologies ($1.65 billion), Pacific Fusion (over $1 billion), and Proxima Fusion ($682.9 million).

CFS, based in Massachusetts, is developing a tokamak reactor named Sparc, aiming to reach scientific breakeven by 2027. The company expects to begin construction on Arc, its commercial power plant producing 400 megawatts of electricity, near Richmond, Virginia, later this decade with Google as a customer.

Helion, based in Everett, Washington, plans to produce electricity from its reactor in 2028, with Microsoft as the first customer. The company uses a field-reversed configuration reactor and has recently raised $465 million in June 2022.

TAE Technologies, founded in 1998, is another fusion startup using a field-reversed configuration reactor. In December 2025, it announced a merger with Trump Media & Technology Group, valuing the combined company at $6 billion.

Pacific Fusion, led by Eric Lander and Will Regan, aims to achieve fusion using inertial confinement with electromagnetic pulses. The startup has raised over $1 billion but will receive funding in tranches upon achieving specified milestones.

Proxima Fusion is focusing on stellarators, a type of reactor that twists and bulges to accommodate plasma's quirks for increased stability. The company aims to complete Alpha, its net-energy demonstrator, in the early 2030s, and Stellaris, its commercial power plant, later that decade.
