Ukraine Confirms Strike on Major Russian Rocket Facility Using Cruise Missiles

Key takeaways
- Ukraine used cruise missiles to strike a major Russian rocket facility
- The Progress Rocket Space Center is Russia's most important manufacturer of rockets
- The Soyuz-2 vehicle and the newer Soyuz-5 rocket are among the facilities produced at the center
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Saturday that Ukraine struck the Progress Rocket Space Center in Russia using ground-launched cruise missiles. The facility, located in Samara Oblast, is home to Russia's most important manufacturer of rockets and was hit by 'Flamingo' missiles, according to Zelenskyy. The Progress center assembles the Soyuz-2 vehicle, a workhorse for Russia, and the newer Soyuz-5 rocket, and also builds military satellites. It is unclear which facilities were damaged, but reports suggest a building housing a clean room for avionics may have been struck. The 'FP-5 Flamingo' missiles used in the attack have a range of several thousand kilometers and have previously targeted energy infrastructure, military production facilities, and other strategic targets.
